Five Years of AMBARtec at HYPOS: The East German Hydrogen Congress Shows How Much Has Happened Since

We recently exhibited as AMBARtec at the 1st East German Hydrogen Congress 2026 in Dresden – an event that made clear just how far the hydrogen economy has come in recent years, but also how many hurdles still lie ahead: from financing to scaling up new storage technologies. A good moment to look back on an anniversary that almost slipped past us in the last few weeks: since June, AMBARtec has been a member of HYPOS e. V. for half a decade.
Over the past five years, our HYPOS membership has given us one thing above all: strong networking and professional exchange with the companies, municipalities and research institutions that are actually driving the hydrogen ramp-up in Eastern Germany. One outcome can be named concretely: the event “Decentralised H2 Production from Waste Materials and Its Storage”, held together with HYPOS in Freiberg, where we discussed the practical implementation of such projects with partners from industry and local government.

That was also a topic in Dresden – alongside another focus: heat. At the AMBARtec booth, conversations centred mainly on our solution for climate-neutral peak heat supply for neighbourhoods, based on iron-hydrogen storage technology – and on the question of how a reliable heat supply can be guaranteed even during periods of low wind and solar output (“dark doldrums”). Our answer: surplus renewable electricity is converted into hydrogen via electrolysis and safely stored in iron oxide nuggets. When needed, it is converted back into electricity and heat for the district heating network, for example in combination with heat pumps – a plannable, climate-neutral peak-load solution that complements existing infrastructure rather than replacing it.

The questions we were asked most often in Dresden – about viable commercial use cases, long-term stable regulatory conditions, and a continuous supply of hydrogen for small and medium-sized enterprises – are the same ones currently slowing the hydrogen ramp-up. It is precisely on these questions that the exchange with other companies and decision-makers within HYPOS moves us forward.

AMBARtec is exhibiting at the 1st East German Hydrogen Congress

On 26 August 2026, the European Metropolitan Region Central Germany and the HYPOS hydrogen network are inviting participants to the 1st East German Hydrogen Congress in Dresden. Please note that the congress will be held in German. As part of the accompanying trade exhibition, AMBARtec will present its compact, safe, iron-oxide-based hydrogen storage systems, which are compatible with standard logistics.
Our exhibition focuses on two key topics:
Seamless hydrogen supply with silver recycled hydrogen
For sites without a pipeline connection, AMBARtec offers container-based hydrogen delivery using standard logistics (truck, rail, ship) – 25–50 % cheaper than conventional storage. We also offer cost-effective silver hydrogen. Unused hydrogen from exhaust and residual streams of industrial processes is captured, processed and returned for reuse. This is recognised as 'low-carbon hydrogen' under EU Delegated Regulation C(2025) 4674.
Heat supply via hydrogen during the cold, dark doldrums
Our storage systems enable municipal utilities, energy suppliers and the housing industry to provide heat and power on demand, even during periods of low renewable electricity generation. Installed in standardised 20-foot containers, the solution is easy to transport and install, and integrates seamlessly into existing boiler and CHP systems without the need for costly conversions. AMBARtec Successfully Advances Digitalisation: New CRM System Strengthens Collaboration and Network Management.

The implementation of the CRM system is laying the foundations for more efficient marketing, sales and project processes. The digitisation aimed to make information centrally available, standardise internal processes, and improve collaboration with customers, partners, suppliers and research and network partners further. The new system enables all relevant contacts, communication histories and project data to be managed in a central company database. This ensures that up-to-date information is always available, regardless of location.
Key improvements include:
Centralised data management: All relevant contact, communication and project data is consolidated across the organisation.
Structured network management: Customers, business partners, suppliers, universities, research institutions and associations can be managed and developed in a targeted manner.
Industry-specific segmentation: Contacts can be organised by industry, region and area of application within the hydrogen economy.
Automated communication: Standardised communication processes in German and English support a professional and efficient approach.
Faster follow-up: Fair contacts, project enquiries and new business opportunities can be processed and developed further systematically.

The introduction of the CRM system was co-financed as part of a funding project by the European Union and through funds from the Free State of Saxony, which were approved by the Saxon State Parliament.

Hydrogen is a forward-looking energy source, particularly attractive due to its excellent storage capacity. The challenge: How can it be transported safely and cost-effectively over long distances? For example, from sun-drenched desert regions to energy-intensive economic hubs?

AMBARtec presents the solution: iron nuggets as storage medium. When loaded, the systems contain only iron, so hydrogen cannot escape. This eliminates the need for expensive safety measures or complex infrastructure work in ports, and ships do not need to be retrofitted.

The storage systems can be easily transported using conventional logistics methods, such as by crane, ship, lorry or rail. They are readily available, technically mature and cost-effective.
